My local gas supplier is managed by a diver (figure the luck in that here in
Vernal, Utah!) and is very cooperative. I started out mixing my own gas by
first reading the O2Hackers Companion, then talking with my gas supplier.
They told me that I needed to get a prescription for medical grade O2, which
I did without any trouble. I then went down to the local home medical
supplier, who promptly drove down to my local gas supplier and picked up a
med. grade t-bottle. They drove it back to their shop where I picked it up.
When I asked for a second bottle, I simply returned my empty at the gas
supplier, they called the home medical supplier and I picked up the bottle
at the gas supplier. On my third bottle, the gas supplier told me that the
gas they sold was ALL MEDICAL GRADE and they sold it as aviator and welding.
The only difference was in their paperwork! Which they now make out as
"Welding Grade" to protect them... but in reality it is all medical grade...
at least at my gas supplier. I suspect that this may be the case many
places, as it simplifies their inventory. They now sell me t-bottles of O2
for $14 a tank instead of the $22 the home medical charges me!
