I wish people understood the difference between D.I.R. and Technical =
diving. Perhaps I can clarify this difference for some of the newer =
people just joining this list.

Technical Diving is often defined as: any dive which involves breathing =
anything other than air, any decompression dive, and any dive where one =
is in an overhead environment.

D.I.R. (Doing It Right) is a back to basics, grass roots type of system =
which espouses a minimalist, basic survivalist, common sense gear =
configuration, accompanied by a strict no compromise attitude, and buddy =
system, which precludes acceptance of personal preference over safety. ( =
It should be called "Common Sense" diving, or "Safe System" diving. If =
only people understood.)

It's possible to be involved in all types of technical diving and not be =
D.I.R. In fact it is very common to do all kinds of decompression =
diving, overhead environment diving, mixed gas diving, etc. without =
really having a clue about how to Do It Right! I know because I dove =
without having a clue for a long time. (Some things I still don't =
understand, but I can learn and continue to do so.) In my opinion =
D.I.R. is the only way to dive, period. It's safer, it makes sense. It =
makes even more sense when one is first learning how to dive. It's =
cheaper, it's more fun, it's simpler. It's the basics... or at least it =
should be. Spread the word. It's a whole new world!
