I say "DIR-like" because I still carry a small dedicated upline spool for those times the anchored boat breaks loose. Maybe next season ... Until this past weekend, we (my wife and I) were the only divers (outside a small group of like-minded folk learning along with us and a few cave-trained local DIR divers) who are close to DIR on our favorite boat, which is not a "technical" diving boat (but the Captain allows us to work on skills and do long-ish dives). This past Sunday, a group of three whom we had never seen before showed up to dive. One of them had a Halcyon rig including the backplate pocket with closed lift bag, EE light with HID head and breathing the long hose (but shower head regs). He also carried a dedicated upline spool, but a HUGE one wound with 1/4 inch nylon line. It was, well, HUGE, and stowed on the backplate under his left arm. His buddies were rigged in the more usual fashion ... Interestingly, this diver was IANTD Trimix certified, with only two years and 70 dives experience.
