Tod, During the preliminary dives they will probably be using standard USN Heliox dives on a tethered diver with surface supplied systems. Standard Heliox utilizes sur-d techniques. Considering the conditions out there, its about 5 miles from the SS Republic and 15 miles from the Andrea Doria; a 20 minute reconnaissance dive is more than sufficient. This is a hellacious location during prime diving season June - August, doing it now is really for the supermen. I would suspect that once a Saturation diving system has been mobilized they will opt to do this as a sat job, where dives will be in the 2-3 hour range with the divers staying in sat for a week or so. Commercial/Military gas diving is very different than technical diving.
