Peter

In the UK and in my experience, the current travels in the same direction
wherever you are in the water column. I have not experienced conditions were
currents go at different directions as I understand can occur in the USA.
So, that being the case, I am drifting at roughly the same rate and direction
as my DSMB and so have no requirement for significantly extra line.

(I'm talking about wreck dives 80 m or less here - I have no experience
beyond this depth in salt.)

Of course the problem of being lost is exacerbated if you deploy at your
first stop but don't do deep stops. Say on an 80m dive for 21 minutes,
you're going to take about 5 minutes to get to the first stop and in that
time you may have drifted 200-400m. As I said not a problem if you leave the
bottom on schedule with the other divers, but it could be an issue otherwise,
especially if you've swum to the other end of a long wreck.

Really?

I mean those reels can become REALLY large, then. The method I've been
using so far is the 'fire bag from someplace below first deco stop', but
then again we don't have THAT much current. What you you do on really deep
dives? With current and so on, you may find you'll need a reel with 200
metres of line. Is that practical?
