Interesting research. The approach would not work for Helium, however. Although the Noble gasses are very reluctant to form compounds of any kind, most will react with Fluorine (Fluorine can oxidize almost anything) under very extreme laboratory conditions. Xenon, with the most loosely bound outer shell electrons, will form hexafluoride, for example, but only reluctantly. Helium, however, is unique in that it will not form *any* compounds with anything under any conditions. Given that, a bacteria that can metabolize Helium would not be possible. -Mike Rodriguez <mikey@ma*.co*> Pn(x) = (1/(2^n)n!)[d/dx]^n(x^2 - 1)^n -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
