Dave- The reason you most likely were not taught to use your BC for ascents is because most recreational instructors get lazy soon after they begin teaching. If they don't fully understand a skill such as a BC ascent, or have problems teaching it, they drop it from their class. By dropping a difficult (but terribly important) skill, it may make their class go smoother, and thus make them seem "better"...at least in their own eyes. Only problem with this is that now that instructor has a bunch of students out there who lack fundamental diving skills, and are, as a result, less comfortable divers. From what I've seen training instructors, this is one of the most common "cop-outs" for a new instructor. The advice on positioning you've been given is (IMHO) quite good, and of a technique that I use all the time. Next time you're on a drift dive, try shooting a lift bag, and ascending (make a few PRACTICE deco stops) under the bag, reeling yourself up, using your lungs and BC for the ascent...of course staying horizontal the whole time!
