Subject: Re: Position during ascent?
Dave, the position thing is to make proper full use of the lungs as a
filter for bubbles, and obviously total offgassing. Compressing part of
the lungs reduces the effective usefull area, and by definition, if that
is occuring, then the body is experiencing different pressures in
different locations - suboptimal fot all reasons.

The correct diving position is always flat, and good diving habits and
dicipline pay off in all situations.

Let me give you an off the wall example - when diving, I am always flat
with my head looking forward, neck bent back. I am so used to holding my
head that way for hours in a cave dive, that when I ride my racing bike,
I do the same bent forward with the head looking up. Sunday, we had a
guy get squirrly and lose it 27 miles into a race in the middle of the
pack going 30 mph, and Volker, Sandra and I were all able to negotiate
the flying bikes and bodies by virtue of the fact that we saw it happen
the instant it started - several people got airlifted out of that one to
the hospital.

Diving is no different - the basics keep you from getting hurt, and keep
you alive.
