The answer to your prayers is a rear crotch d-ring, excellent for storing 
just about anything, and keeping it totally out of the way.

I keep my penetration reel there (if wreck diving), my lift bag, and my 
safety reel sometimes.

And, if you think putting stuff on your hip ring is hard with gloves, just 
wait till you start using the crotch d-ring :-P
