Dave-

I think we are arguing in circles here. Was the deceased diver solo 
diving or not? If not then he was "same ocean" buddy diving. Which means 
that at best his "same ocean" buddies are wracked with guilt, or at worse 
a lawsuit could ensue.

So either dive solo (yes, Dave, you know that I am a solo diver) or be a 
real buddy team and use this system effectively to increase by a large 
margin your chances for survival. My point is that classic North East 
"same ocean" buddy diving is an absurd and useless practice exemplified 
by this death.
