Use a 1/4 to 3/8 inch nylon covered bungie cord for a jon line - 6 to 10 ft long. Absorbs shock - no tangle - holds lots of weight - easy to wrap up and store. If you are on a deco line in a stiff current and need both hands to help a buddy - hook in. You may want or need to hook "him" in. Don't underestimate the value of hands. They are usually taken for granted and in an emergency you'll usually wish you had a couple more. I agree that holding to a line in a strong current can force blood out of hand and forearm tissues - bad idea during obligatory deco. I don't even like to hold on to a video camera during deco. Every diver needs to be prepared to do a drifting deco on any big water ocean dive and the boat needs to be prepared to handle it in stride. Learn to fly on instruments if you intend to dive from boats in the ocean and get rid of a need for visual references. Dependency on that damn anchor line is a very serious handicap.
