Hi Everyone, I was thinking about line signals for IWR. Commercial line signals are not really appropriate. Do you really need to say "I have reached the end of my jackstay"? It would be nice if there was an internationally agreed on standard for IWR line signals. I haven't used line signals for controlling IWR. Over here the diver usually just jumps in the water until they get better or the O2 runs out. I'm sure that there are lots of divers who would prefer a more controlled setup. I'll get the ball rolling with a suggested system, and then *everyone* can comment, add, subtract, suggest and fight. You don't need to have run a thousand IWR's or have your PADDY line signals badge, we're talking about talking with rope. *Everyone's* opinion is valid! How about this, pulls (long slow tensions) are for moving, and bells (short sharp tugs in pairs) are for gas switches and such. So; (just some terms to start, so we all know what we mean. tender = the person on the surface holding the rope(s) tied to the person(s) underwater. Often controls the gas supply (or shouts at the guy who does) diver = the sick person underwater attendant = the person with him underwater) tender to diver/attendant One pull Stop Are you ok Yes Two pulls No Three pulls Go down slowly I'm lowering you Four pulls Come up I'm pulling you up Two bells You are on Oxygen, Purge your regulator to clear the line Three bells You are on Air, Purge your regulator to clear the line diver/attendant to tender One pull Stop I am at the stop Yes Two pulls No Three pulls Lower me slowly Four pulls Pull me up slowly Continuous pulls Pull me up, emergency Two bells Switch me to Oxygen I have switched to Oxygen Three bells Switch me to Air I have switched to Air Four bells I have no surface supplied gas, I'm switched to bailout Three bells The diver has convulsed, switch to Air and maintain depth (continually repeated) And one real commercial line signal; Seven bells *&$% off!!! It looks like a lot to learn but it isn't really. As the diver you go down the shot till you get to the mark (which has been hung at a measured depth). When you get there you give one pull (OK, I'm here!) and you get one back (recieved and understood as you have arrived at stop). After that the tender simply pulls up the shot to the correct depth as required by the table in use. At the end of the treatment the tender will send four pulls (come up). You will send four pulls in return (recieved and understood as come up). If you can't come up under your own steam you might send four pulls (pull me up) and the tender will send four pulls back and pull you up. Now you need to contribute, post your modifications to this (or objections) so we can thrash out a system that everyone likes! Cheers Jason (trouble maker to the world)
