Rich: << You mean like Patton, famous for his civility and politeness to privates recovering from battle fatigue? Or maybe like Schwarzkopf, famous for his fair, urbane treatment of his own staff? >> Let me clear up a misunderstanding before it gets twisted beyond belief. No team could succeed as the WKPP has without an outstanding leader in George Irvine. The records, the accomplishments, the team cohesiveness; none of this would be possible without a strong personality to keep it all together. However, there is a distinct difference between what one does in the field and how one conducts themselves before the public. In each of the Generals you mention above (and I can name a few more), they could be very harsh and demanding on their constituents, but once they stood before the public to represent the military an entirely different set of standards was expected of them. Here too, when the Director of the WKPP is making public statements to the media, is representing technical diving to the community, or is expressing the concerns of the diving industry, aplomb and respectfulness are needed. If that is not possible, than perhaps a new position should be created that will help bridge some of these self-created problems, freeing up Mr Irvine to do what he does best, which is leading the best deep diving team in the world!
