I considered this approach but rejected it as I felt that my solution was
more elegant and potentially more reliable (not that I would expect good
stitching as you describe to fail). A buddy of mine is planning to make
some larger SS weight retainers from a blank of SS sheet that I bought which
would then allow my thick webbing to be used. Peter: any progress on this?

David,

Thanks for the description. I've not heard of anyone else setting up a
2-inch crotch strap as you have done it.

My method uses a short length of 1-inch webbing run through the backplate
slot and sewn to the 2-inch webbing. The stitching goes through three
layers of webbing, and has proven to be quite durable (but I haven't used
a scooter yet). I started out using a metal slide for the front loop, but
on the set I made up last month for our Caribbean vacation I used a delrin
slide which seem to make for easier adjustment, even with the webbing wet.
I use the same stiff 2-inch webbing for the shoulder/waist harness and
crotch strap.

The sewing is done on my wife's household machine, which isn't really up
to going through three layers of heavy webbing, but with a little hand
work on the wheel it does the job. Of course I use a heavy duty thread,
and the amount I use is surely overkill. But my wife and I each put around
60 dives on these setups last year and they seem to be holding together
very well.
