Yes he died at 120+ metres on air, in fact while attempting a new world depth record for diving on air. I have just come back from the Red Sea were he died and the above was confirmed but that is not an argument against the use of air on "deep dives" as such. The effects of high partial pressures of 02 is well known, its effects are fact and not worth discussing at this level, diving to 120+ on air defies logic. Were the discussion or arguments should centre are on the divers who dismiss alternative gas mixtures including Nitrox for dives in the 20/30/40/50/60+ metre ranges. The use of Nitrox would improve safety, allow a clearer mind during a dive and reduce post dive fatigue. Unfortunately most divers dismiss alternatives to air without learning the facts or benefits to be gained, its a case of closed minds. One of the reasons to resist Nitrox by average club divers seems to be the need for planning and discipline ( i.e., planning your depth in advance to allow mixing your gas) but they should see this as a positive thing. Just my thoughts, I await the backlash.......... -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'. Send subscribe/unsubscribe requests to `techdiver-request@aquanaut.com'.
