I looked at all the locally available BC's before buying the Mares and it is ine of the best and most comfortable non-DIR's around. Yes it is more comfortable than a backplate and DIR harness but if youre not going Hogarthian or DIR it's a fine BC with lots of lift, Dump Valves , Buckles, Straps, weights, pockets ETC. If you do consider going DIR and youre not cash strapped its a fine rig and looks it too. If I didnt go DIR and if i didnt also do shallow and vacational diving it's the only BC I would own. I think it's better than the Poseidon Tech ( a buddy of mine dive's one) and the reason he got his is that the Poseidon is cheaper and simpler. (Got his after I had the Mare's). Hope that helps but still suggesting you consider going DIR.
