I have been using independants for some time. It is possible to get at the pillar valves to turn them off or on whilst underwater, and with a drysuit. It takes a bit of practice and requires the cylinders to be mounted at the correct height, then you might have to "walk" your hand down the hoses until you get to the pillar valve. Blocks are available over here. The use of them is safe if they are used properly (like most things). Mine is chest mounted and has two outputs and three inputs. Each input has an on/off switch and two of the inputs are connected to my main cylinders via large bore, quick disconnect, drysuit type, connectors. The third input is for travel and deco mix: On the way down, it is connected to my travel mix and I swap one of the main cylinder's connecter for my deco mix connecter on the way up at the stop before I want to use it. My deco cylinder(s) are pressurised and turned off; they are mounted upside down next to and infront of the mains. O O o( )o please forgive the ascii graphics but [ ] ( )=me, O=main, o=deco, [ ]= front mounted travel The pillar valves of the deco cylinders do not protrude below the base of the mains. One of the two outputs is connected directly to a full face mask and the other goes to a 7ft hose via another valveand quick disconnect. On the far end of this hose is yet another quick disconnect with a second stage on it or the second stage can be removed and the hose will plug into another simmilar mixing block to cope with a buddy's problem. All the quick disconnects on the hoses are clipped to D-rings with shock-cord so that I don't "loose" them. -- |_| _ _ _ < Internet : harry@ra*.de*.co*.uk* | | (_)_ | | |_| < CI$ : 100141,1632 <Harry Railing> | < Snail : 25 Dafforne Road, London SW17 8TE, UK
