of Ireland wreck (Rimouski, Canada) is now protected by the Canadian
government and the protection is being enforced.

Apparently, a diver was charged following an inquiry by the RCMP
(Royal Canadian Mounted Police) on November 13th for illegaly
removing artifacts from the wreck. His first appearance in court
is scheduled for the 21st of jan 1999. Updates to follow. >>

The wreck was protected early this year (late last year?) after a commercial
salvor stated that he planed to blow her up in order to get the cargo of
nickel in her hold. The Canadian archaeologists and historical groups fought
the action and got the wreck protected as a memorial to those who died. If you
don't know the Empress was rammed in 1914 and sank within 18 minutes taking
1012 people down with her (only a few less then the Titanic). She is in 180
feet and is well preserved in fresh-brackish water of the St. Lawrence River.
Summer temps are 35-40 and vis is 0-15 feet.

Since the wreck was protected, the dive shop has lost about 1/2 it's business.
Rimouski is a long way from anywhere and there is not much else to do there.

There is a good web site on the wreck, just do a search for Empress of
Ireland.
