The Canadian archaeologists and historical groups fought the action and got the wreck protected as a memorial to those who died. If you don't know the Empress was rammed in 1914 and sank within 18 minutes taking 1012 people down with her (only a few less then the Titanic). She is in 180 feet and is well preserved in fresh-brackish water of the St. Lawrence River. Summer temps are 35-40 and vis is 0-15 feet. Since the wreck was protected, the dive shop has lost about 1/2 it's business. Rimouski is a long way from anywhere and there is not much else to do there.
