John,

you ask <<<As a NAUI technical instructor, what do you consider as
>a standard tank marking.>>>

Makes no difference that candidates can earn a NAUI cert card after
sucessfully completing training -- what I want in tank markings are as
follows.

Tank color for back tanks most anything other than black
Stage - metal, white or yellow anything else and the markings are hard to
read.

Back tanks need to have (for enriched air) 4 inch green band 1/2 inch below
shoulder encircling tank with the words NITROX or Enriched Air Nitrox
stencilled on them. Back Tanks for trimix -- need similar band either
saying TRIMIX or CUSTOM MIX. Crown of these same tanks needs to have the
mix and the MOD clearly marked in indelible ink. no crayons here --
specific tank content labels are also acceptable.

Air tanks are to have no wraps (and yes air is still used for some things)
but they are to have an AIR labels (get these from Grainger)

Stage bottles -

Oxygen --- minimum 2 inch high letters spelling out O X Y G E N running
down the tank in proper orientation for the tank - on the left the O is at
the top on the inside the Y is at the top -- plus a 20 MOD

EAN -- see above plus - the MOD clearly stenciled on the tank in its proper
orientation.

Argon --- white or brown --clearly stenciled A R G O N -- Do Not Breathe

Contents analysis labels with permanent marker on all tanks.

As much as I had a minor problem with permanent markings on tanks I have
decided that all my cylinders (I got a whole lot of them) are to be
stripped and dedicated to specific gases. (This is the winter project) If I
can find the time and support the expense of doing this to my cylinders so
can anyone. (see now i am committed to doing this)

Standardizing on tank markings is critical to diver safety. If you cant
read the tank like a stop sign it's not marked. If it does not have an
analysis on it -- its not mixed. If i dont know whats in it -- dump it and
start over. None of us can afford to screw up on such a simple task as
proper tank markings.

John, hope this helps you.
