John-

I suppose there is a chance that my information is out of date, as I've
not renewed as an IANTD instructor this year (nor have I received
further updates to their standards.) In light of this, however, I
suggest you re-check your facts. The following is taken from the Feb. 1,
1998 revision of the IANTD Standards and Procedures Manual:

"Regulators used with tanks containing high levels of oxygen must also
have green or white second stage covers and/or hose wraps or other means
of identification as oxygen service regulators, leading to the second
stage. Alternatively, the second stage purge buttons may be green or
white."

Sounds like they want some color coding (or at least something
DIFFERENT) to distinguish regulators on a "hot" or hyperoxic mix.

I'm not supporting either side of this discussion, just clarifying what
I perceived to be a mis-statement of facts. Personally, I tend to use
both 'touch distinguished regulators' and the method prescribed in DIR
for getting the right gas. I would never switch to a gas just because
the reg felt right or looked like the right color. I do, however prefer
to have my O2 stacked on the bottom, so if I had dropped my bottles and
vis went to zero, I could at least (by touch) get them stacked in my
PREFERRED locations. By the time I'm ready to actually breathe from
either of the bottles, I'd better be able to see the markings as to
what's in them, or I WILL NOT BREATH FROM THEM! (even if the reg FEELS
right.)

Okay, that's my quota of babble for the month...back to reading and
learning!
