Hmm...interesting point. In my experience, very few regs are SO
DIS-SIMILAR that they wouldn't function (at least on a minimal level)
when stages are swapped around. I use a Scubapro Mk20 for my O2 reg, and
a Sherwood Maximus for my 36% (or intermediate mix). Both of these regs
function fairly well with each other's second stages (Not up to factory
spec, but certainly enough to keep you alive and comfortable!) And yeah,
the second stages are attached finger tight so I can swap them if I had
to. I can honestly say that my choice of regs was based on what was
around in the shop at the time, not going out of my way to have the best
of the best all around. (I do think shop employees have an obligation to
dive what the shop sells....of course I wouldn't work in a shop that
didn't sell something good and safe to use!)

Both of my stage regs are DIN, and I (I may have misunderstood your
point about din/yoke) don't understand why you couldn't swap out a whole
DIN reg U/W in an emergency....sure, a bit more twisting and screwing,
but not harder than a yoke...(yes, I've tried it!)

I think that when the fit hits the shan, most combinations of regs will
work with each other's second stages. Again, perhaps not to factory
spec, but certainly enough to keep you alive! Now, if you're using a
G-250 and a Poseidon, you're screwed....but who would do that anyway?
No one _I_ would dive with!

Safe diving!
