Big ego ??

No, a serious commitment to teaching SCUBA right, a respect and love for
life, both mine and my students, and a business philosophy of always keeping
our client's comfort and safety as our highest priority and to provide the
best instruction currently available.

Yep, in the open water/beginner classes I lead, and observe and during the
dives everybody gets plenty of free time and fun time. The more advanced the
class, the more "ownership" they get. At each and every step the divers gain
more independence, self-reliance, increased safety, improved skills, more
pleasure and fun from the diving.

I bet you're one of those instructors that tells their students " okay folk,
this is going to be the naturalist dive as part of your advanced class, go
have fun and look for critter. " Yes, the standards do allow in-direct
supervision, and I bet you make full use of each and every avenue to reduce
class, pool and ocean time. How about taking the class to an aquarium for
starters, then do some tide pooling, then some snorkeling, and finally when
they are ready for a real dive, arm them with nets and glass jars and tell
'em to back soemthing they cannot identify, so we can sit on the beach and
crack open some text books and id the "mystery". Then as part of the
naturalist dive, have them id some herbivores, detrivores, omnivors and
carnivors. Next some symbiotic, parasitic and mutualistic relationships.
What are the current game laws and what can be harvested. What are is the
impact of this harvesting ? ID some vertibrates and invertibrates. Examine
kelp from the foothold all the way up to the canopy, and all the snails and
crabs and fish and worms that live . . . .

Oh, did I loose you, I was just getting started on my naturalist outline.

Did I really loose you that quickly ?

Well, I'm sorry, but I guess we are just instructors of a different breed.
I'll stick to doing things my way, and you stick to doing things yours.

Big ego ? No, just trying to do it right. Don't really need a flame war, but
if you have a sincere responce, and truly disagree with me, hope to hear
from you, via post or private e-mail.
