Subject: re: body recoveies
Tom, as you are well aware, I do not do body recoveries unless there
is nobody else who can do it. You are well aware of the criticism I have
undergone for this policy.

In cave diving, if they need me to do the body recovery, then the
person whould have had to have been diving with me in the fist place.

In ocean diving, the need for me is due solely to the fact that I have
the high speed scooters, have no reservations about jumping into
anything at any time, and will show up and hold the hammer down so long
as I have the gas and will give it a good look, covering miles if
necesary.

I do not know the Elkins' personally, but if my kid were lost, I would
want somebody to be out there getting me answers. I will get those
answers. Palm Beach is my permanent weekend dive spot when I am not cave
diving until I get results, and Volker, Mee, and Carmichael are on the
same page with this. It is just like Marlin fishing - you put your time
in, and you will get lucky.

Volker and I did a dive Saturday, Mee and Carmicahel did a dive, and
then we all did a dive. Beautiful dive, sailfish everywhere, too bad we
seem to be the only ones who can do it 21 times with no problems.

In the Jane Ornstein case, we got lucky and hit within twenty minutes,
and that was only because Mimms got us within 3000 feet of the spot,
unlike the situation in Palm Beach, where we are searching an 800 foot
wide ledge that runs eight miles in 260 feet of water in a ripping
current.

Anyway, my opinion is that if we had more people doing it right, we
would not be having this converstion. Look at the body recoveries you
have had to do in your day, Tom, all due to practices that have long
been either discontinued, or frowned upon. Eventualy, this will be true
of what killed these people, and of what has killed the last 20 "tech
divers".

You also need to know that my team does not want me doing recoveries -
they do not want me wigged out of diving. As Robert and I were gearing
up to go into the water Saturday, he pointed to his gun camera and said
, " I will never forget seeing the fins sticking up ", and we discussed
it, and then we dove.

I should say...attempted body recoveries...they did spend quite a bit of
time
looking for Andre, John and Mike. I fact I seem to remember a post
stating
that they are STILL looking for them...
