Subject: newcomer/ deep water corals

Hi there!

Being new to the mailing list, I'd like to give a brief presentation of =

myself.

I'm 33 years of age married with two small kids. I started scuba diving i=
n =

1980. Sinze then, I have made 1600+ dives. The last seven years I've be=
en =

living (and diving) in Stavanger. Stavanger is situated on the southwest =

coast of Norway, has a population of about 100 000, and is the "oil capit=
al" =

of Norway.
I live on an island outside the city only 30 metres from the shore. From =

september to april I make one nightdive each week outside my backdoor, =

photographing the marine life.

In 1984-85 i worked as a "minediver" in the Royal Norwegian Navy. I was =

aducated on Drager FGT-1D rebreather, Kirby Morgen equipment and deep air=
 =

diving on scuba, Our main task was to demolish explosives, mostly old st=
uff =

from the 2. world war.

Nowadays I work as an engineer in the oilindustry. Working with =

modifications on existing oilrigs, make me work both on- and offshore.

In my sparetime I dive, photographe and write artichles on diving. I hav=
e
80-100 dives per year (30-40 tech dives including 2-6 Trimix dives per =

year).

Last summer I joined The Norwegian Technincal Diving Society as a =

photographer on their project in Lake Tinnsj=F8. Recovering the bell from=
 DS =

Tinn resting on 102 metres in dark cold freshwater. On our first dive we =

managed both to take pictures of the ship/bell, and to bring the bell to =
the =

surface.

Allthough marine biology is my main interest, I do a lot of wreck diving.=
 =

Searching for virgin wrecks is both interesting and exiting. To find some=
 of =

the more exiting wrecks in the Stavanger area we go off the Jaeren coast,=
 =

which has several hundred wrecks from WW2 and earlier/later times, at dep=
ths =

ranging from 35msw to 70msw. Many of these wrecks has still not been visi=
ted =

by divers. Diving there is
however often very difficult due to heavy currents and swell.

Our next project is to search for deep water sceractinian corals (Lopheli=
a =

pertusa) in one of the norwegian fjords. Littel known is that Norway has =

more than 130 located coral reefs (built by lophelia corals). Most of thi=
s =

reefs are found on the continental shelf and shelf edges between 200 and =
400 =

m. in tempratures between 4 and 8 degrees celsius. However in one fjord, =

unique marine conditions has made one reef grow at only 60 msw. Heavy =

currents, cold water and rough weather has protected these corals from =

divers, and they have only been photographed by ROV's.
We will allso search for other types of free growing deep water corals li=
ke =

Paragorgia aborea, Paramuricea placomus and Primroe resedaefermis.

We have to drive more than 1000 km's to get to the divesite and are going=
 to =

have 8 days of diving.
The plan is to do 2 dives each day on depths from 30 to 65 metres. The di=
ves =

will be done on air, but we will bring EAN80 as decomix. We plan to take =
one =

day off to "degass". I have very little experience with this kind of =

repeatedly diving and hope to get some advices from you people out there.=
 =

Proplanner is going to be used to plan the dives.

Rudolf
