Subject: AE2 Project 98 Expedition to Turkey

Please note that the 1998 Expedition to positively identify the WW1
Australian Submarine the AE2, lost in the Sea of Marmara off Turkey in
April 1915 is now underway.  Run from 26 September - 08 October 1998, the=

project is lead by Dr Mark Spencer of Sydney Australia, and follows in th=
e
foot steps of an original expedition in 1997. =


An extremely important part of Australia's national maritime history the
project is the result of many sponsors including TDI, The Royal Australii=
an
Navy, Compaq Computers Australia, Abyssmal Diving Inc, The Channel Nine
Network of Australia, Pro Diving Services (Australia), Telstra, Singapore=

Airlines, The Rami Koc Museum (Istanbul), Maxwell Optical Industries and
many others. =


Diving to depths of 73msw / 240fsw the project intends to return document=
ed
evidence of the AE2 wreck for use by Turkish & Australian Maritime
Archeologists also involved in the project.

Diving will be conducted off the Rami Koc Museum's research vessel the MV=

Saros using a helium based mixed gas open circuit SCUBA of 16% Oxygen, 50=
%
Helium & 34% Nitrogen.  Due the the extreme depths & repetitive nature of=

the dives decompression will be conducted using two oxygen/nitrogen Nitro=
x
mixtures on tables calculated on the Abyss 2.0 Advanced Dive Planner  run=

onboard two Compaq Armarda Laptops.   In addition, the reseach vessel wil=
l
also carry a Mixed Gas Recompression Chamer & a hyperbarice physician, Dr=

Akin Toklu from Ankara, Turkey.

The project will incorporate the extreme edge of communication technology=
,
with the digital images recorded on a  Nikon Coolpix 900 digital camera o=
n
loan from Maxwell Optical Industries sent via a Telstra Mini-Satellite
phone using the  Compaq Armarda Computers to the AE2 page on the Australi=
an
Navy's web site.
