The agencies I teach for specifically state dives # 1 and # 2 to a maximum
depth of 40 FSW. Dives # 3 and # 4 to a max depth of 60 FSW.

What would the value be of using Heliox to control nitrogen narcosis ? At
the max depth of 60 FSW your PN2 is 2.23 atm. Do you get narked at 2.23 ??

If we really wanted to improve dive safety ( and if you really want to shake
up the recreational SCUBA world ) lets take a trip to Kevin-land, where I
make up all the rules:

Open Water / Beginner : Course is taught and students are trained on EAN 36.
Certification Card issued specifically states certified to dive to 60 FSW,
and obtain only EAN 36 fills. ( 1.02 PO2, 1.80 PN2 ) Students are DRILLED TO
OBSERVE MOD.

Advanced: Course is taugh and students are trained on EAN 32.
Certification Card issued specifically states certified to dive to 100 FSW,
and obtain only EAN 32 fills or EAN 36 fills. ( 1.29 PO2, 2.74 PN2 )
Students are DRILLED TO OBSERVE MOD.

Deep Specialty: Course is taught and students are trained on EAN 28.
Certification Card issued specifically states certified to dive to 130 FSW,
and obtain only EAN 28, EAN 32 and EAN 36 fills. ( 1.13 PO2, 3.56 PN2 )
Students are DRILLED TO OBSERVE MOD.

Air Specialty: Course is taught and students are trained on air.
Certification Card issued specifically states certified to dive to 160 FSW,
and obtain air and all mixes of nitrox EAN 22 to EAN 50 ( 1.23 PO2, 4.62
PN2 ). Students are DRILLED TO OBSERVE MOD.

( 4.62 PN2 is really what I feel the borderline of "deep air ". At that
depth I start to feel wobbly. Next step would be technical training and
trimix. At this point, with the training and academics and skills drilled
into the students, we would have safer deep divers. )

Of course, the normal compliment of specialties and rescue diver and
divemaster and the whole world of technical training remains as it is. But
by simply starting people off on Nitrox, and incorporating the training into
the courses, I think we would improve dive safety overall.
