Actually I have. You have cylinder rental (or outright purchase) costs
as well. The gas price is just one thing. You also have the price of
the mixing whips, fittings, analyzers (if you don't already have them),
pressure gauges plus you need a place to store them. Personally I've
already "tested the waters" with my wife about storing a few K bottles
of O2 in the garage. That was a short conversation. Don't want the
kids (ETA 4 months) to play around them. You also need a way to either
boost the gas and you definitely need a way to put air on top. How much
is a compressor and Haskel these days? The shops around here know me.
If I came in for air they would either analyze the tank or dump it
before testing. If you're not going to use a Haskel you're probably
wasting a lot of gas so that means a cascade of 3-4 tanks isn't going to
cut it. I work in another state (live in NJ, work in NYC) so who''
going to take delivery of new tanks? Oh, is there a delivery charge?
Although I can stuff quite a bit of gear into my Audi I think K bottles
would be pushing it. :-)

As for helium, most of my dives don't require it. Wouldn't make a lot
of sense to store or pump it.

My diving buddies through about mixing our own as a group but then the
decision of where to store, who does the mixing and at what hours of the
night came up. Nitrox prices aren't that bad around here, it's just the
helium...

Sounds like NE divers should be blending their own gas.
In Colorado a "K" of O2 is $25, Research grade Helium
is $125 for a "K" cylinder. Could probably blend enough
gas for a Doria trip for about $300. Have you checked the
price of gas from suppliers up there ?
