which in essence boils down to the constant dilemna faced by each
of us every day as a consumer... and to that we say let the buyer
beware.

No he received poor instruction. But who is at fault?

Let's change the situation. Al, you go to your local dealership
and buy a used car. You do not check the blue book, you
do not ask for references about the dealer, and you do not
take the car to a shop you trust to check it out. You pay
$10,000 over retail for a lemon. Who is at fault? You are.

Yes. If you don't take the time to check references. This
is techdiver. We are talking about divers who profess
to being experienced. They should be able to ask these
questions.

> We know who the asshole instructors are, but we dont say anything, why??

Nobody asked?

> Doesn't our silence implicate us in their suffering??

Not if the students can't be bothered to ask, no. I don't
take out ads in the local paper to advise people where the
best car deals in town are. I don't bother to post responses
to newsgroups when someone tries to sell used gear at new prices.
If the potential buyers don't do the research to know what
a fair price is, well the seller just got lucky.

You protect yourself by educating yourself. If you fail to do
that, then you throw yourself at the mercy of dumb luck. And the
key word there is dumb.

You cannot remove every instructor who might ever make a mistake.
You can however teach divers from the beginning to prepare
themselves to deal with dive mistakes even when they
happen to occur on training dives. Few if not zero training
dives have to be little more than simple extension of skills
done in previous dives.
