You can still aquire your skills on the boats. You gave a perfect example of how diving in general & boat diving in particular should be. I wish more people were bitten by the bug & went out once or twice a week. I run a dive boat (the John Jack) I dive at least three days a week 4 - 6 dives per week. some one who only gets in the water for two dives every other week (which would be considered a very active diver in the N.E. ) can never hope to match my skill & comfort level. Dive training is necessarry but dive experience is the most important. We are NOT discouraging new or skill lacking divers, We do not want to see anyone get hurt. we would like to see divers do dives that are right for them, as they build skill & confidence levels. I belive that these skills are built best in 50 - 100 ft of water with lots of bottom time. I see way too many new divers jump right into 90 - 130 ft. range. As a consequence they have too short of a bottom time to build skills and eventually drop out, because they are uncomfortable. This theory holds true for the diver that walks out of an advanced class at the quarry, right in to doubles & a dry suit. In diving you can not buy your way in. It must be EARNED one dive at a time. It seems that you have taught yourself this lesson, and have done well. Congradulations. Unfortunatly not every one teaches themselves as well, as a result a lot of people who may have come to love diving, drop out. We need to get the training agencys and dive shops to get people diving on a regular basis. not just in conjunction with another class. People need to do dives inbetween clasess to reinforce the skills they were taught, master them, then, and only then, go on to another course if they so desire. This was the way it was in the late 70s & early 80s before the explosion of PADI (Put Another Dollar In) shool of diving. advanced training is great. but it should not be a substitute for diving.
