Hey y'all Just had a chat last night with a german technical diver, walter Comper, who reports a new world record set by another friend of our ,Jens Hilbert, who is a member of the German Navy's Waffentauchergruppe, or Combat Swimmers. Jen swam (is that a word?) 55 kilometers underwater on a single dive (around 30 mi.) in a pool in Bremen. He has been training for thiss for quite some time. This swim was done in 24 hours, using Force Fins. Jens is"an animal" according to Walter and as I know personally, a helluvva nice guy. The combat swimmer are all highly trained in demolition, use rebreathers extensively, and parachute in to their targets. Jens is also a cave diver but his Navy superiors kinda frown on that as being dangerous! Don't want to lose a very expensively trained soldier. I was fortunate enough to meet these guys while shooting a documentary about rebreathers. The most surprising thing about the combat swimmers: most of them smoke Marlboros!! Even the team physician. Figure that out. So anyone care to try and break that record? I do have some friends who want to set a new distance record scootering. That would be a hoot. Put on a rebreather, hop on a scooter, pop a CD into the player, and boogy!! If anyone is interested in this long disstance sscootering project, and has any connections for corporate sponsorship, please let me know. logistics are in the planning stages but these things can poop out without the $ to cover the expenses. Congratulations to Jens !!! CB -- Christopher A.
