An informational note:
On Saturday, December 17, 1994, Francisco (Pipin) Ferreras
broke his own free diving world record by plumetting to 417 feet on a
single breath in the waters off Key Largo (Florida Keys, USA).
Sponsors and organizers of the event (Dixie Divers, Mares, and Sector)
said that the dive went without a hitch and offered the following
information:
* The previous record was 413.5 feet
* The dive tok 2 minutes and 22 seconds
* Pipin made his descent on a 130lb sled mounted on a weighted cable,
and the ascent on a lift bag.
* There were 12 safety divers spread out at various depths.
* Judges used two computers on the sled, measurements of the cable,
and observations from a tri-mix diver at 420ft to verify the depth.
Ferreras operates Pipin's Dixie Divers in Key Largo where, in
addition to the usual dive operations, he teaches a unique free diving
course. Anyone interested in additional information can contact Dixie
Divers, Mares, Sector, or Pipin's shop in Key Largo.
