I believe the theory is that every new cave student is going to roll it
off sometime in the first few dives, and this way they find out about it
right away when it happens and learn from it.

On the other hand, the student who is warned about it (me, for example)
still hasn't ever actually done it.  Seeing another diver whack his knob
off in Devil's Ear was just further icing on the cake as far as an
adequate healthy level of paranoia about watching where my manifold is
going goes.
