Optimum is nifty. Reality is that not all dive profiles fall into this category. Being perfectly balanced is certainly ideal. In that case(and only yhat case) a 2nd bladder is absolutely extra (just as in many cases a drysuit is extra). I have freely stated several times that extra gear should not be taken along. The question is when is it extra. But a 2nd bladder being "extra" in "ideal" cases hardly qualifies it for the vilification it has gotten, IMO. And then what happens when you want to do that profile that require 15 minutes more air than you will get out of AL80's? You hit the real-world where things are not ideal. You switch to larger capacity tanks. In that context you seem to insist on using a drysuit. why? At first you claimed it was for deco safety, now there are repeated references to backup buoyancy for the heavier tanks. In _this_ case a 2nd bladder may serve the same function as a drysuit, when exposure is not an issue. Bill refers to this setup as convoluted, when it involves no more complexity (and lacking the argon bottle it is actually LESS complicated) than using a drysuit. Hell it'd be nice to own 4,6,8, sets of doubles, but most of us have to make due with fewer than that. In that case not all dives will be done under "optimum" conditions.
