all right no flames..BUT some comment

> the gov. is right around the door
>to impose some bullshit laws on us to better "help" us enjoy our sport.

so WHAT?
if the agencies cannot or WIL NOT clean up their own acts who is to say
that the government canot do it for the public AND do it more effectively?
i'm frankly sick of the knee-jerk parrot-like reaction that the government
is bad at EVERYTHING...(ever hear of the Manhattan Project?)...i personally
drive more happily knowing that at least drivers are SUPPOSED to be
licensed.

but again...as we happily let greed dictate what should be public safety
decisions, what right do we have to complain?

>most new divers do not go through the learning curve us "old timers" have.

most newcomers also learn more in their first 5 days of classes than MANY
old timers i know learned in their frist few years...they were LUCKY to
have survived to learn more and most whom i respect admit as much

at pone time one could buy a tank that came with an "instruction" sheet
that said "don't hold your breath"
THAT was scuba instruction

>trying to learn how to clear your mask while making 3 gas switches is more
>than most newbies can handle.

and more than any "newbie" should need or want to handle.
that's an advanced skill for an advanced diver...isn't it?
so what was the point?
that mask clearing isn't being taught?
it is...and just as well as it ever was.

there is certain "experience curve" of
>things that go wrong, and this curve is what i feel keeps the experienced
>diver around.

here you and i agree

>The learning curve set forth by the agencies is to fast and
>allows no time for the diver to accumulate dive time. it's diving from one
>class to another. A person can go from padi open water to full blown mixed
>gas in 2-3 years.

first of all...diving with an instructor IS diving...if a student is more
comfortable diving with supervision i don't think that should be
DIScouraged..do you? really?
learning from those who do it better is the BEST way to learn...the issue
SHOULD be do we have instructors who DO know it better and DO it the way
they know they SHOULD?

also...you chose (again in classic knee-jerk, crowd pleasing manner) tpo
cite PADI...which recreational agency DOESN'T allow divers to go directly
from calls to class?
in FACT..i would suggest that if you certify a student in OW1 and he is NOT
qualified to proceed to OW2 then you failed as his OW1 instructor.
plain and simple

as far as progressing straight to Trimix..PADI doesn't teach Trimix...so we
have ANOTHER issue here that doesn't involve your knee-jerk whipping boy,
PADI

it's the tech agencies taking people who should really be recreational
divers into tech training that they are not prepared for that SHOULD be the
target of your scorn.

and again...what makes it likely for an instructor and his agency to accept
these relatively inexperienced students?
greed.

we may NEED the government to step in and save some lives.
the welfare of the citizenry...that's what the government is FOR.
