I have taken my share of outboards out of the ocean, none which I put there, and have been told two things. One .. keep it in the saltwater until you can get it right to the shop to be rebuilt and the second to put it in to fresh water until that point. Either way you don't want in submerged for longer than a day or so. Each of the outboards that I have had to deal with have returned to service with little to no noticable damage.
