Snorkels - Final.

There are so many situation and conditions.

Jim, your point of view is more from the technical diving point of view. Do
I use one in the water when tech diving? No.
* I have more air then I need
* I have a completely different set of tasks
* Dive objectives are completely different.
* There is a completely different set (I hope skill level) of divers around.
* etc. etc. and so on.

Should I have a snorkel available to me to assist a diver in need. YES.
* I maybe on the boat and need to jump in.
* I have no tank on my back -- time is everything -- sometimes the
difference between an assist or rescue or recovery. (many story could told)
* A assist with a tank, plug in the reg and watch out for the hands, you may
need to go below.

Recreational.
* That is the hard one.
* If you are working with students, It is taought as a safety device. We
quote _more_experienced_divers end quote are setting the examples to them.
Do you tell the to get a bigger tank, they just rented the one they have. "I
learned on the 72 cuft, I thought that was all I neede". Jim I know you have
been on the boat enough to have herard and seen all that stuff.
* Me fun rec diving with know good buddies. My snorkel is on the boat and in
the bin.
* I will take it with me if the conditions exist that I feel that it will
assist me in object of the dive.

Conclusion
I take exception to calling it "a useless appendage". It servers purpose and
each diver needs to learn when they want and/or need to take.
As far as out of air - larger tanks, watch air consumption, dive planning,
..... Here on the list we talk about safety, needs, problems, management,
etc. When an "O" ring goes who cares how big the tanks is. It could be a
long swim back to the boat or shore. That snorkel could come in handy then.

David

Hey, Dave, relax. I'm not flaming, I'm discussing. Believe me, you will
know it when I'm flaming. We are just having a little friendly
conversation here.

And yes it's true, I used to dive with a snorkel, guilty as charged. But
I don't any more and was just passing on my thoughts as to why.

See ya-

 Jim
