As a newbie, I've stayed out of this debate until now. But I think I
have a perspective to add to the "instructor vs. student responsibility"
issue.
There seems to be a fair amount of unwillingness to discuss advanced
diving techniques among instructors and others who work in sport diving.
My next step in training is going to be getting into Nitrox. I called a
local shop to ask about what fills they have available and prices. Their
first question was "Are you Nitrox Certified???" When I answered "No," I
got a long story about how I need to take the class and buy dedicated
Nitrox equipment, etc.
There seem to be a fair amount of people who answer simple tech
questions with a vague "That is all answered when you take the class."
The best advice I've got by far has been from a cave diver I know.
Things like what goes into making Trimix, what equipment works and doesn't
work, etc. It seems like you need to hang out with the "hackers" of the
sport to get the real scoop.
In any case, I have spent a great deal of effort collecting the
information I feel I need to make an informed choice on what advanced
training I'm going to take. I don't think the information is exceedingly
easy to come by. Granted, you should have some dedication before you get
into advanced diving, but I sport instructors should be more forthcoming
with info.
