I realise that techdiver might not be the best place to place this query, possibly rec.scuba and the like would be better, but I need a more 'educated/experienced' response. So please bear with me. I'm a BSAC diver/assistant instructor. Currently I'm affiliated with a dive shop which teaches ACUC/NAUI. As part of this affiliation I've been approached by a number of students due to harassment(insert sexual if you prefer). Now the harassment comes to my ears because I'm an outsider rather than being part and parcel of the ACUC/NAUI instructional grading I'm just giving a hand, which leaves me more a a Teaching Assistant/Helper. However the problem stems from an instructor harassessing a number of students over the years, some have handled the situation by ignoring it until another 'victim' took the flak away from them. Other up and left mid-course. Whatever the results, several students are more than a little upset. My query is does ACUC/NAUI have a policy for dealing with this kind of thing. Have they an email address as a contact point. The instructor in question is experienced and gets results, however all those others who are aware of the 'problem', need the guy for something. Their next certification level, or whatever... I however am outside his sphere of control. I have no axe to grind. But I can't sit back and watch as this kind of thing happens. I know that at least 3 of the students have reported official complaints to the shop owner. But I believe that (a) the instructor has financial controls/restraint over the shop owner (b) and/or the shop owner is also one of the teaching team, and thus is 'controllable' by the instructor. Suggestions...
