Subject: Re: incident statistics
You guys at Wkpp Have a good track record I never indicated otherwise.

I have not taken a beating from dan over the Vo2 Max thing. I have just
presented another side to his beliefs. Some of the Deco times he stated for
Unfit guys 3 - 4 times that for fit divers is wayu off base. Dan is mixing
his apples & oranges. It is better to be fit for any sport you do. but Vo2 max
is about moving O2 & CO2 through out the body . this is an excellent way to
measure fitness & aerobic capacity. But not a good way to measure someones
abillity to on or off gas inert gases while diving. Humans are not geneticaly
engineered to dive. But we are able to dive INSPITE of our physiology, not
BECAUSE of it. There is too much imperical information out there that
provUnfit people can & do dive to depth & deco off their inert gas load,
Basically just as well as fit divers.

There was a large medical diving convention in Ca. a few years ago. All the
big names in diving physiology were there. With all the diving firepower there
no cvould agree on EXACTLY causes DCS. or how to predict with certainty, who
will or will not get bent on a particular dive table. We are still learning
about the mechanism of DCS.

If fit thin divers are so much better at Decoing, then why do commercial
diving companies hire fat divers ?? If the most certain way to get diver who
will not get bent easy, and can be decompressed faster, is to get thin fit
divers why don't the commercial companies hire only these kinsd of divers./
Every minute of deco the company can cut off schedulkes means money saved to
them. Commercial diver are almost never george types, but bulky heavy men who
can get the job done, day in , day out.

Dan had some interesting ideas & realized that it would take a lot of
tank/chamber testing to prove. But he wascawfully cheap with the details when
I told him his special for fit thin divers deco schedule was almost exactly
what I would use via Migplan. But Dan did not offer up the details to make an
exact calculation, still even with guessing I came within 5 min of his
profile. It is true that I personally do not do many dives beyond 30 min & 280
ft. deco in the open ocean with no support crew is very challanging. generally
the limiting factors to my bottom time is not gas supply, but how long I want
to hang. Generally 45 min. for a sport dive, and 90 min. for a special dive.
In general rthgis will give me 35 - 40 min at 24- - 300 Ft. You guys get
better deco conditions in the caves, than we do off the boats.

I offered to take Dan out diving (i would supply the boat dives, lodging, air
fills & on water O2) right now we are talking about scheduling. It will be
very interesting to see what happens if he does come uo. We have a counter
offer froin Capt J.T. in Virginia beach too. Im ready any time. you send"em
I Bend"em.

Thank you for the kind Email with only small flames
