Mon Cher Capitaine,

Kevin Gannon didn't " may have gotten it wrong". He purposely wrote his
little snippet to discredit us and antagonize members of the WKPP. He
comes right out and states plainly that we have an obvious "hidden
agenda". Our agenda is not hidden. We are right up front about our
commitment to the "Doing it Right" credo. So far "Doing it Right" seems
to have a pretty good track record compared to what else is out there.
Do you not agree?

As for talking to people, I believe we know how to do that fairly well.
I think the 80 or so individuals who attended the WKPP Indian Springs
Seminar on February 28th seemed to comprehend the many positive and
informative messages which were put out.

Let's face it. You've taken something of a beating of late on this whole
issue of physical fitness and decompression, beginning with Dan Volker's
comments on VO2 max. Frankly, I must applaud your honesty with regard to
coming out and admitting your physical indisposition.

I am sure you are a pretty nice guy with plenty of friends who will
attest to this fact. It tends to come with the territory of being a dive
charter captain. Still, based on my own experience and that of many of
my WKPP colleagues I can tell you flat out that you are in for a serious
physical beating the moment you attempt to pull a mixed gas exposure
exceeding 30 minutes (time on the bottom) at 280.

Decompression is very much a function of cross sectional area and
microcirculatory perfusion. Thick concentrations of body fat are poorly
vascularized and must be decompressed very carefully. In fact, my guess,
is that you simply cannot properly decompress severely fatty tissues
without significant capillary blockage and subsequent damage. The DCS
type 1 symptoms to bulk fatty tissue are not very pretty and approximate
a crushing injury. The first time this happens to you, and it has
happened to me (and I have relatively little body fat and subscribe to
the Dan Volker school of fitness) you will be signing up with an
aerobics program at your local gym.

All of the guys in the WKPP will gladly share this information with you.
Just ask nicely, publicly or privately.

Best regards,

Bill Mee
