bill you raise an intersting thought here, it is one that i have gone over with bill hamilton a few time over the past 15 years at different times. years ago when we only had the navy tables many of us (independently) came to the realization that the hangs on deco had to be longer & later we realized that they needed to be deeper as well. these adjustments seemed to save us from many of the major & minor hits (skin hits & elbow & sholder niggles) that many of the divers were getting. ther has always been a number of divers that thoght the extra hang times were ("wennie") but i must say that it worked. many of the divers had the interest in trying to shorten the hang times as much as possible (with the obvious goal of remaining free of those niggles). what has happened is the length of the dives has increased dramatically & until we got into different gasses it the hangs limited the bottom times (for us). now you are raising the point that at 280 for over 30 min you resulted in some injury. well your response was to get into better physical condition to "adjust" yourself to fityour dive profile. i find this totaly acceptable & realize that it will work until you get to a depth & or time that pushes the dive beyond you conditioning. at that point i am sure you will come to the conclusion that you will have to make some other adjustment, longer hangs - shorter dive- different gas. whatever it takes to accomplish the dive is what you will do. we have all agreed that your premisses for the most part are probably true regarding the fatty tissues. so all of us either overweighted or out of shape or older divers have made there adjustments. it seems to me that it is all relative. i have always been willing to make my dive fit the circumstances & from the dives you guys do you are doing the same. it really is a different ball game from diving warm water to diving cold water. you know from our conversations in the past tha i'm not into the chest beating stuff about better or worse. different is just that & nothing more. you guys have the opportunity to stay in(out in some casses) as long as you like doing your deco's. we don't have that luxury. you guy's don't do 2 - 4 hrs in water on your open water dives, we do. all of these things create the challanges that we need to overcome & it's what make this sport so great. we have people of all sizes & shapes doing the dives all over, should they be excluded from doing what they want? if they can make the "adjusments"- lose wt, get more fit or extend there deco time & change there gasses- & reach the point where they do not get bent who has the right to stop them or castigate them? at that point we are all at the phase of having fun doing what we all love- we are just doing it a little differently. we are all doing what apparently works for each of us, IMHO that is the bottom line. see you at BTS. hank In a message dated 98-03-13 09:42:40 EST, you write: << Subj: Re: incident statistics Date: 98-03-13 09:42:40 EST From: wwm@sa*.ne* (Bill Mee) Reply-to: wwm@sa*.ne* To: CAPTZEROOO@ao*.co* (CAPTZEROOO) CC: Scaleworks@ao*.co*, cavers@ww*.ge*.co*, techdiver@aquanaut.com Mon Cher Capitaine, Kevin Gannon didn't " may have gotten it wrong". He purposely wrote his little snippet to discredit us and antagonize members of the WKPP. He comes right out and states plainly that we have an obvious "hidden agenda". Our agenda is not hidden. We are right up front about our commitment to the "Doing it Right" credo. So far "Doing it Right" seems to have a pretty good track record compared to what else is out there. Do you not agree? As for talking to people, I believe we know how to do that fairly well. I think the 80 or so individuals who attended the WKPP Indian Springs Seminar on February 28th seemed to comprehend the many positive and informative messages which were put out. Let's face it. You've taken something of a beating of late on this whole issue of physical fitness and decompression, beginning with Dan Volker's comments on VO2 max. Frankly, I must applaud your honesty with regard to coming out and admitting your physical indisposition. I am sure you are a pretty nice guy with plenty of friends who will attest to this fact. It tends to come with the territory of being a dive charter captain. Still, based on my own experience and that of many of my WKPP colleagues I can tell you flat out that you are in for a serious physical beating the moment you attempt to pull a mixed gas exposure exceeding 30 minutes (time on the bottom) at 280. Decompression is very much a function of cross sectional area and microcirculatory perfusion. Thick concentrations of body fat are poorly vascularized and must be decompressed very carefully. In fact, my guess, is that you simply cannot properly decompress severely fatty tissues without significant capillary blockage and subsequent damage. The DCS type 1 symptoms to bulk fatty tissue are not very pretty and approximate a crushing injury. The first time this happens to you, and it has happened to me (and I have relatively little body fat and subscribe to the Dan Volker school of fitness) you will be signing up with an aerobics program at your local gym. All of the guys in the WKPP will gladly share this information with you. Just ask nicely, publicly or privately.
