I'm not chest beating. I'm illustrating differences in gas exchange rates---this is the area we want more scientific study done on. This forumn is responsible for driving the testing that will soon occur. And actually, I try NOT to say heavy diver by itself, in a descriptive phrase---I say obese AND sedentary. These are the two components that guarantee a low VO2 max. A skinny sedentary diver could have a low VO2max as well, but would be unlikely to get one as low as his obese and sedentary counterpart----however, enough smoking and drinking could help this along. I have said that a very fat diver, who trains cardio really hard, for many months, could have a VO2 max that is not much below the "average " value for untrainied Americans (40ml/kg). This will put them much closer to standard tables on shorter duration trimix dives, even to 250 feet. But once longer durations cause helium to saturate the slow compartments ( the large "helium sink, of fatty tissue"), much longer stops will be called for. We may even see that where duration MUST last for 20 or 25 minutes, at depths up to 170 feet, air may have exponentially less DCS risk for the obese diver. And this may help pave the way for the "TDI school of Intelligent Drunk Driving", and this may well become the permanent "niche" of the heavy diver. This is not to say I endorse this, I'm just saying this could be a result of extensive testing----and how the overweight market decides to react to it.
