Unlike some, at least you have decency to ask rather than to form an opinion on which you have no solid foundation. I've chosen to respond to your e-mail both to you and the techdiver list to set the record straight. >>As I recall, you wrote an article a while back about a dive deep on air. At that time, you took a _lot_ of heat on tech diver. Shortly after that, unfortunately, I had to leave the list.>> I never wrote an article. (you are of coures referring to the Wah Wah article published by AquaCorps (Mike Menduno). That article was written by someone I never heard of nor spoke to. I did speak to M.M. privately, as he was somewhat a friend of mine. He had questions about what went on in the Bahamas. Had I known his true agenda, I would have given him a written article myself so that the facts would be facts, as opposed to talking with him. Weeks later, I was faxed a copy of the "Wah Wah" article prior to it being published, asking for my permission to allow it to run. I told MM it was inaccurate, and he could not publish it without inaccuracies being corrected. I told M.M. when I had time, I would be happy to send him an article. It's the media, what do you expect. He published it anyway, sending me and advance copy of the issue with a letter in it stating that he decided to publish it anyway, that it would "save lives". Here are some facts about that dive: 1) Brett Gilliam, Mitch Skaggs nor Joe Odom NEVER SOLICITED OR PROMOTED anyone to do any dives deep on air. They just did them, and so did I. Ask WKPP member Armantrout-he was with me, he was my dive buddy that whole trip. 2) I did not promote deep air then, nor do I now. I did, however, learn a lot about diving, diving deep on air. Call it the explorer in me, or in anyone. We all have it, just at different levels. I acted on it. That's me. Did I set a bad example?? That could obviously be debated forever. >>I rejoined the tech diver list yesterday and saw the message quoted below where you state that you're against deep air. Did something happen between then and now to change your beliefs or have I misremembered the incident a year or two ago.>> No, my beliefs are the same. Diving deep on air is dangerous and stupid when other gases/techniques are available. But what is deep on air?? Has it been clearly defined?? I think that that is still a gray area. When diving in Bonaire, would you dive a wreck at 180fsw on air because mix is not available, or would you forgoe the dive?? Is a truly experienced, 1500 plus dives to 200fsw on air, low vis "cold water wreck diver" more dangerous on air in warm clear water at lets say 180fsw, then a warm water, newly certified tri-mix diver on mix with a total of 150 dives under his belt?? Perhaps senarios such as this is what makes it difficult for agencies like ANDI, IANTD and TDI, to have a set of standards that is approved by everyone. I'd like to hear from others on this. >>Again, my apologies for dragging up something that may be... painful (Being flamed by some of the personalities here can be an experience akin to standing on a fire-ant hill...), but I'm curious.>> And if you wish to ignore this request, that's fine too ::grin::.>> -- Kevin -- >> I don't care about the flaming. I'll take that over the ant hill anyday. Those that flame shows more about themselves than they know. Ask me a question, I'll answer. You may not like what I say, but then we are all entitled to our opinions. Too bad you can't always express them without being tramped.
