i've rigged a plate with some very nice supple 2" webbing, and it sucks. 
the stiffness of weight belt webbing makes it much easier to get in and out
of the harness.  it also keeps the d-rings from sliding, and it stays put
in the backplate slots much better.  so my advice is to use the stiffest
webbing you can find, it'll soften up a bit with use anyway.
