Why is symptom denial so classic a symptom of DCI that it is mentioned in most books? Why do some people believe their physiology is that different to everyone else's? Look at skiers, a plaster cast is almost a trophy returning from a trip, yet the causes of that type of accident and a diving one are the same - pushing personal limits too far, or the fact that it was not your day - but no one boasts about the number of times they've been in the pot. The correlation between peer pressure and machismo causing accidents and deaths is probably far more valid than TDI vs.IANTD vs. Self Taught and been doing it for years. Our Mix instructor said that he would 'Be down on us like a ton of F***ing bricks!!' if he heard that we'd be bragging about depths and stuff. Whether it be to other mix divers, experienced air divers or Novice club divers (Yes I'm British and BS-AC trained). The responsibility lies with the doers to teach by example as well as by teaching programs. Maybe I'm naive, but the Wah Wah business was very much a case of 'do as I say, not as I do' and although that was publicly stated by Brett Gilliam and Joe Odom. It can only serve to encourage others to believe that maybe they're special enough to survive 450 on air.
