Just to set the record straight, I have never ice dove without surface support but I do feel that in some cases it is unnesesary(not all of the time what happens if the line breaks? i have never had a line break. Solution if you are worried about is could be to use thicker line on your reel. Generally i can see the hole very well from where we are. shoveling radiation lines out from the hole adds alot of light and a handy path back to the hole if you need it. Actuallu i was talking to a researcher in antarctica doing research on penguins and they never ice dive teathered or even with lines(lots of surface support though) I usually dive similar to the way nanci described but with only one line in the water and the divers buddy teatherd. I don't feel that this is a necessity though. Generally we use 50-75 feet of line to the divers (when teathered) and the safety has twice as much as the divers. This is not even comparable to cave diving. I've >never seen a cave a mile wide. Try finding a 4'x4'x4' hole under that much >Ice. It's like looking for the preverbal needle in the haystack.
