Multiple divers in the water and only one ascending off the >mooring and/or you do not know if the others are making free ascents. >This will usually put at least one diver at risks. >I could generate other scenarios however I think this illustrates why >it's best to have the diver maintained in a fixed and known location when >making any type of ascent. >Curt Lets put my original post in a little more perspecitive. 1] This is a bailout reel i.e. it is not used in normal circumstances. 2] boat cover in the UK is not moored it is ready and waiting for this type of thing 3] It would be very difficult to miss a large delayed SMB - mine is 1m tall and since I deploy from the wreck it would come up near the boat. 4] If one buddy pair used a delayed SMB the boat would follow that - then return the the wreck and pick up other divers who have come up the shotline (do you use shotlines there?) 5] It has to be remenmbered that if >1 buddy pair use delayed SMB's then they are both going to be affected by approx the same currents. 6] I would say that with lots of buddy pair in the water and 1 boat then I would not be happy about doing lots of deco from a delayed SMB - but then a lot depends on the state of the tide...... etc 7] I agree that in some a fixed line is better - however the increased deployment time and the need to either dive again to get it back or leave it to tangle other divers seems to offset this greatly. --James
