It is interesting how divers in different parts of the world do things:

When diving in the UK on decompression dives or dives of any depth it is
normal to carry a delayed SMB and reel. If the shot line cannot be
found for the return to the surface then the delayed SMB is deployed by
cliping it to the reel then inflating it (taking care to hold on th the
reel) . The buddy pair then reel there way up the line and can perform
a deco stop with slight negative bouyancy for comfort. Stops of this
type can be very comfortable also because you move along with the
current.
Some UK divers deploy a delayed SMB without a reel. Their SMB has
9meters of line on it and a small weight as the other end. They deploy
in at about 9meters having done the rest of there asent with no shot
line etc.
We always dive with boat cover in the UK i.e. there is someone in the
boat ready to follow the SMB you send up.
