In general practice a loop would be tied in the line at the desired depth for a hand hold or to be clipped into for the deco stop. Although I typically maintain neutral bouyancy, many divers in cold water diving will hook into the ascent (normal line or emergency ascent line) and positively inflate their dry suits for added thermal comfort.
