Dave Waller questioned my explanation of the oxygen window, pointing out (correctly) that hemoglobin in blood increases O2 solubility. I now realize that I misspoke, but if you replace "venous blood" with "body tissue" in my explanation, I believe it is correct. CO2 produced by respiration in body tissue is much more soluble than the O2 it replaces (by a factor of something like 25), and there is no hemoglobin in body tissue to increase solubility of O2.
